Boat trips on the "Great Lake" Tonle Sap
We offer both, tickets for public service boats from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh or Battambang and tickets for private or shared boat excursions to floating and stilthouse villages at the northern shores of the Tonle Sap.
Express boats to Phnom Penh and normal boats to Battambang start 7.00 am and will take a half-day for your journey. Boat trips to Phnom Penh and Battambang are a interesting travel experience and restful alternative to using National Roads. But please be aware, that it cannot be provided each and every day. Boat service to Phnom Penh is only available 3 months, from January to March, which is high season in Cambodia. Boat service to Battambang is provided all year long, but sometimes not possible because of water levels. All our boat transport tickets include pick-up from your hotel.
There are two destinations for private or shared boat trips (half day excursions up and down) close to Siem Reap. These popular tours include pick-up service from the hotel, too.
Chong Kneas is a floating village, this means fishermen families live on houseboats and the village's form of housing scheme is flexible. It is situated 12 km south of Siem Reap. The itineraries usually include a break on a restaurant houseboat with a small crocodile farm.
Kampong Phluk (Kompong Pluk) is 20 km south-east of Siem Reap, not far from the Roluos temple group. It is a completely different kind of fishermen village, Cambodians usually live in stilt houses. The stilt houses of Kampong Phluk are spectacularly high, up to 10 metres, because of the seasonally changing water levels. But you can see the full height only in the dry season, particularly during the tourist high season between January and April. In the rainy season the stilts can be completely under water.
Boat trips to both destination, Chong Kneas and Kampong Phluk, will partly be on rivers and partly on the lake. The river banks on the way to Chong Kneas will allow you to study fishermen activities. On the other hand, the boat trip at Kampong Phluk will offer better opportunities to study the marsh land forest, also called “underwater forest”.
We also can arrange boat trips to less frequented destinations. Kampong Khleang is Cambodia’s largest stilt house village. Prek Toal village is on the edges of the bird sanctuary of the same name. Please understand, that trips to Kampong Khleang or Prek Toal are more expensive due to the far distances, and that usually less costly shared tours cannot be provided, but during high season sometimes they are arranged, too. Private tours can be arranged for you all year long.
